Process synthesis from multiple interaction specifications Abstract: The traditional approach to model (business) processes as stepwise executable activities which interact with multiple partner processes by typed interfaces seems to lead to centralization or at least to a very tight coupling of the interacting systems. In this talk, a unifying approach is presented that models the specifications of both, deterministic processes as well as their possibly nondeterministic interactions starting from the same building blocks, namely finite input output automata (or transducers). Processes are viewed as finite systems that take part in multiple, possibly nondeterministic interactions. The interactions between processes are specified as protocols. The synthesis of a process specification is illustrated by the example of a resource administration process which has to coordinate its interaction with a requesting process, specified by the mutual exclusion protocol, and at the same time with other resource administration processes, specified by a token exchange protocol, to guarantee the exclusivity of the access. So, starting from an interaction centric perspective together with a synthesis procedure for process specifications, this approach circumvents the centralization tendencies and allows the construction of truly loosely coupled (finite) systems.

Van Der Waals Interaction between Nano Objects. Field Enhancement Factor on the Top of Nanotube. Abstract: Van der Waals (VDW) interaction between nano objects is strong enough to move them. The method of uniform potential for VDW interaction between nanotubes (NT) of different nature will be presented. On the top of NT in cathod anode configuration the electrical field may be in 1000 or more times (enhancement factor) bigger than between plane cathod and anode. So one may get electron emission for very small effective voltage. The derivation of enhancement factor is important for Field Emission Displays (FED) and will be presented.

New Results on Stability Analysis and 𝐻∞ Control Design for Time-Delay Systems with Markovian Switching Parameters Abstract: This talk will highlight some new control algorithms for time-delay systems with Markovian switching parameters and mixed discrete, neutral and distributed delays. Based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional theory, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities for the stochastic stability and stabilization of the considered system. The desired controllers are derived based on a convex optimization method such that the resulting closed-loop system is stochastically stable and satisfies a 𝐻∞ prescribed level of performance, simultaneously

Co-Autor Maik Günther Titel: A Comparison of Different Heuristic Approaches on some Real-World Workforce Management Problems Abstract: We compare different heuristics with varying degrees of domain knowledge on some highly constrained real-world workforce management problems taken from logistics and retail. Domain-specific constructive methods (commercial), agent-based heuristics tailored to the particular problem, simple generic multistart local search heuristics, and (hybrid) metaheuristics are employed. The results suggest that hybridising a metaheuristic with a problem-specific repair heuristic is a useful approach of resolving the conflict between domain- and instance-specific characteristics of a real-world application and the desire to employ generic optimization techniques, at least in the domain of workforce management. However, the results also suggest a non-linear relation between the complexity of a search space and the success of individual metaheuristics, even if the underlying application problems are of the same general problem class. In practice it is difficult to estimate a priori which metaheuristic approach will be most successful on a given practical application. A solution to this open research question would obviously be of great practical value.

The small-gain approach to force-reflecting teleoperation over networks
Abstract: In force-reflecting teleoperator systems, the interaction forces between the slave manipulator and the environment are reflected to the hand of the human operator. The purpose of the force reflection is to create haptic feeling of the task. In many cases, the existence of such a force reflection leads to increased performance and establishes a more powerful feeling of presence for the human operator. However, haptic interaction involves energetic exchange between master and slave devices, which naturally creates stability issues. If teleoperation is performed over a network, such as the Internet, additional stability/performance deterioration arises due to irregular communication delays, time-varying transmission intervals, and possible information losses. In this talk, a design approach is presented which allows for stable and transparent force reflecting teleoperation in the presence of network-induced communication constraints. The approach is based on a combination of the small gain design which guarantees stable teleoperation in the presence of irregular communications, and projection-based force reflection algorithms for human-robot interaction which effectively solve stability vs. transparency trade-off.

Optimization of logistic flows in a train maintenance facility Abstract: The case study of this presentation considers a train maintenance facility of the French railway society. The facility consists of several buildings. Each building is assigned a maintenance task: electrical, mechanical, painting … As the workload was increasing; there was a need to optimize the logistic flows in the facility and to set a new facility layout by exploring unused buildings. The objective is to maximize the number of the treated trains in the facility. As a first step, the simulation with the ARENA software was developed to model the whole facility and all its characteristics: the buildings, the maintenance locations, the production sequences, the train types … After that, different simulations have been carried out to test different cases and assess the impact on the performances. In addition to that, an optimization method based on genetic algorithms was developed to identify the best queuing strategy that should be applied in each maintenance location queue. This simulation based optimization technique was therefore based on coupling the ARENA simulation software with the genetic algorithm developed in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). The route-first cluster-second principle in vehicle routing Abstract: Many heuristics for vehicle routing problems with several vehicles are based on the cluster-first route-second principle, for instance the sweep heuristic from Gillett and Miller (1974): the customers to be supplied are partitioned into clusters, giving one traveling salesman problem (TSP) in each cluster. An opposite idea is to relax vehicle capacity to build one TSP tour visiting all customers, and to split this tour into capacity-feasible trips. In contrast, this route-first cluster-second principle has been seldom used. Beasley (1983) suggested some heuristics based on this principle, but without numerical results. The talk will show that the route-first cluster-second principle can lead to very effective heuristics and metaheuristics for vehicle routing problems. Indeed, the splitting problem can be solved optimally (subject to the sequence imposed by the TSP tour) and in polynomial time, for the basic vehicle routing problem (VRP) and for several additional constraints. The simplest (constructive) heuristics consist in running any heuristic for the TSP and splitting the resulting tour. Such heuristics are easily improved by randomizing the TSP algorithm to yield several tours which are split before returning the best result. Possible metaheuristics include memetic algorithms (genetic algorithms reinforced by a local search procedure) and evolutionary local search. Since it is possible to compute quickly an optimal VRP solution (subject to the sequence) from any TSP tour, these metaheuristics can work on a population of TSP tours and search a smaller solution space.

Vibration control of structures using Magnetorheological dampers subject to seismic motions Abstract: In recent years, the protection of structures against hazardous vibration has gained special interest. Structures such as buildings, bridges and vehicle suspension systems are subject to vibrations that may cause malfunctioning, discomfort or collapse. It is an extended practice to install damping devices in order to mitigate such vibrations. Furthermore, when the dampers are controllable, the structure acts as an adaptronic system. Adaptronic systems are characterized by their ability to respond to external loading conditions and adapt to these changes. These abilities can be exploited to solve the vibration mitigation problems through the installation of controllable dampers and the design of appropriate control laws for an adequate actuation. Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are one of the most attractive solutions to this problem. MR dampers are semiactive devices that can produce high damping forces with less energy requirements than other devices of their class. However, MR dampers are highly nonlinear devices whose dynamics are characterized by a hysteretic force‐velocity response. Additionally, the systems where they are installed, are characterized by parametric uncertainties, limited measurement availability and unknown disturbances. The presence of all of these factors makes mandatory the use of complex control techniques in order to get a reliable performance of the control system. This talk will highlight some new control algorithms that incorporate these problems in their formulation, especially, the dynamics of the damper. In order to do it, three control methodologies are explored: Backstepping, Quantitative Feedback Theory and Mixed H2/H∞. The proposed control laws are applied to different structures equipped with MR dampers in a novel Real‐Time Hybrid Testing platform.

Structural properties and adptive control of material flow networks - Biology and Technology - Abstract: Networks of infrastructures are essential to most biological and technical systems realizing material flows. Remarkably, these systems share the same notions of functional modules, like a transport infrastructure (a cytoskeleton as well as roads, railways or conveyor belts) individual mobile transport units (motor proteins, trucks or transfer cars), buffers for intermediate storage, and other modules, well-known in engineering. Looking into more detail, it turns out, that these networks are subjected to several physical constraints. Furthermore, all transport networks are challenged by the necessity of covering an area or volume while guaranteeing a certain flow and dealing with the tradeoff between keeping the construction and maintenance costs low while simultaneously maximizing the reliability and robustness of the network. We have analyzed structural properties of different material flow networks, among them baggage handling systems in modern airports and other technical material handlings systems. By applying network analysis methods to these large and complex material flow systems, we found, that the investigated systems share common properties which may be utilized for future topology design methods. We demonstrate that the analysis provides important insights into the material flows without utilizing time consuming simulation studies. Furthermore, we gather insigths into the close interdependence of bio-inspired adaptive control strategies with the underlying network topology. Thus the results of network analysis and optimization have an immediate impact on the design of properties like robustness, stability or performance of technical systems.

Collective Flow Patterns Generation in Queueing Networks Roamed by Autonomous Agents The inherent complexity characterizing production and/or service networks strongly favors decentralized and self-organizing mechanisms to regulate the flows of matter and information in circulation. This basic observation motivates us to study the flow dynamics in queueing networks roamed by autonomous agents which, at a given time and at a given vertex location, select their routing according to (individual) historical data (such as waiting times) collected during their past progression in the network. For several simple network configurations and despite the intrinsically non-Markovian character of the dynamics, we are able to discuss analytically the emerging collective dynamics that such a circulation of autonomous agents generates. Feedback loops in the network topology coupled with the presence of delays in the routing selection mechanisms produce a wealth of dynamical phenomena like self-sustained generically stable oscillations, spatio-temporal patterns, stabilization by noise phenomena and oscillator synchronization that can be explicitly discussed. While such type of multi-agent dynamics is in essence inspired by human behaviour, this modelling framework is by far not only restricted to social systems. Indeed, the RFID technology available nowadays allows for the implementation of this kind of decentralized dynamics in logistics, supply or manufacturing networks dealing with highly customized products. As an illustration, we propose a new dynamic fully decentralized load sharing policy (LSP) which optimally dispatches the incoming workload according to the current availability of a set of operators. The underlying decentralized decisions rely on a "smart tasks" paradigm in which each incoming task is endowed with specific autonomous routing decision mechanisms. By optimal LSP, we mean here that our "smart tasks" based algorithm permanently requires the engagement of a minimum number of operators while still respecting due dates. The numerous stigmergic interactions between these autonomous tasks solely cause the optimal LSP to emerge. Olivier Gallay, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland Market Sharing Dynamics Between Two Service Providers We study the market partition between two distinct firms that deliver services to waiting time sensitive customers. In our model, the incoming customers select a firm on the basis of its posted price, the expected waiting time and its brand. More specifically, we quantify by a cost any departure from the ideal brand expected by each incoming customer. Considering that the two underlying queuing processes operate under high traffic regimes, we analyze the market sharing dynamics by using a diffusion process. As a function of control parameters, such as the waiting and brand departure costs or the incoming traffic intensity, we are able to analytically characterize a transition between an Hotelling-like regime (dominated by brand considerations) and a deadline type regime (dominated by waiting time considerations). The market sharing dynamics is described by the time evolution of a boundary point, which time evolution belongs to the class of noise-induced phase transitions, so far widely discussed in physics, chemistry and biology. Explicit illustrations for both symmetric (i.e. identical servers) and asymmetric cases are worked out.

Producer decision-making in markets with network externalities Markets with network externalities, by which more users make a product more valuable, such as mobile telephone and Internet service markets, have been growing rapidly. In such markets, the value of products is created through dynamic interaction among consumers and producers. This study presents analyses of the mechanisms of their interaction in a market with network externalities, particularly addressing producers’ decision-making. A simple decision-making model is constructed and examined using multi-agent simulation, game theoretic analysis, and experiments using human subjects. Results show that incomplete information among consumers might encourage new product market growth. Additionally, we discuss producer strategies for a product introduction plan, comparing results with real world data. A Study on decision-making and institutional design in recycling systems: an analysis of markets for collecting wastes This study presents a specific examination of decision-making of economic agents in a recycling system and analyzes recycling as a social system. A market model for collecting used products is constructed based on market microstructure theory. In addition to the theoretical analyses, we examine the behavior of each decision-maker and the overall recycling system using the multi-agent system that comprises both human subjects and computerized agents. Results show that the theoretically best case is not good in experiments. Moreover, this study also presents discussion of institutional design by comparing experimental results with current institutions using real-world data for several types of products.

Advances in Stability Analysis and Synthesis of Time-Delay Systems with Applications in Networked Control Systems Abstract Generally, the advances in modeling, simulation, control and optimization with different computational techniques of Time Delay Systems during the past decade have enabled the academia and engineers to research delay effects in networked control systems, in which control and communication issues are combined together, and all the delays and limitations of the communication channels between sensors, actuators, and controllers are taken into account; for instance in many military, commercial and industrial applications. This talk will highlight some recent research activities related to stability analysis, feedback control design and synchronization problems of dynamical systems with different time-varying neutral, discrete and distributed delays, and will also discuss on some applications in networked control systems with simultaneous consideration of network induced delays and measurement quantization and illustrate some simulation results.

Designing an electronic auction market for complex ‘smart parts’ logistics: Options based on LeBaron’s computational stock market Abstract: Modern technologies, such as RFID, offer never-before seen learning abilities to parts moving in supply chains. Logistics systems may be understood as complex adaptive logistics systems (CALS). They also may be conceived as electronic auction markets as ‘smart parts’ bid for the best routing and pricing from transportation firms. To ensure the world-wide functionality and efficiency of CALS transportation markets, we suggest the utility of an agent-based computational market design based on Blake LeBaron’s stock-market model. Given that parts may be more or less smart, markets more or less complex, and self-organizing CALS systems probabilistically subject to the bullwhip effect, we suggest nine different computational CALS market-design options, offering more adaptivity to unexpected environmental contingencies.

Dynamics of Modern Communications for Modern Logistics Abstract: Digital Communication is among the fundamentals of modern Logistics. Especially autonomous and decentral approaches to control and decision making result in a rising demand for digital communications. Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes have been reinvented in the 1990s and, under Belief Propagation (BP) decoding, have been proven to be able to approach Shannon's Channel Capacity for block lengths tending to infinity. In this talk we will consider the BP algorithm from a decoding perspective and show that a control systems perspective might lead to insights and improvements of the iterative decoding of finite length LDPC codes.

Dynamics and the Process of Appropriation: The NotePlus Case Abstract: Appropriation of ICT drags tools and actors into a sociotechnical process. ICT, practices, and organizations are strongly modified. Only an interplay approach can reveal the complexity of relations between technology and work practices. From the structurational model of technologies (Orlikowski, 1992, 2000) and Actor Network Theory (Callon, 1986; Akrich, Callon and Latour, 2002 (a and b); Latour, 1988, 2005), my approach of ICT appropriation in organizations is based on structuration and translation dynamics. Combining these two dynamics, I shed light on the appropriation paths. Through an implementation of management tool in the teaching world for one year, I focus on the emergence of appropriation dynamics of pedagogic software by the teachers. This approach shows that actors and ICT changed around compromises in the network. The contribution of this communication is in the coupling of the structuration and translation dynamics of appropriation to identify the appropriation paths. MobiSteer: Using Steerable Beam Directional Antenna for Vehicular Network Access Abstract: Broadband wireless network access from moving vehicles is an emerging area of interest. WiFi technology provides a great potential for such access because of its ubiquity and operation in unlicensed spectrum. However, the performance of WiFi-based communication between a moving vehicle and roadside access points (APs) is often unacceptable, because of poor link quality and frequent handoffs. In the MobiSteer project, we are addressing this problem using directional antennas and beam steering techniques. In this talk, I will describe practical approaches for beam steering and how they can improve the communication between the moving vehicle and roadside APs. I will demonstrate the performance potential using extensive experimental results with a commercially available eight element phased-array antenna. As an aside, I will also describe how MobiSteer can be used to localize roadside APs located outdoors or inside buildings. This can provide useful data to researchers interested in modeling chaotic deployment of WiFi APs in urban areas. Finally, I will show how the MobiSteer concept is useful also in the context of vehicle-to-vehicle links.

Markov Processes and Applications Abstract: Since the basics of Markov processes was first introduced by A. A. Markov in 1907, this concept is being used in many different areas stretching from logistics and other physical system modelling to communication & computer systems and mobile user location. After discussing the basic features and limitations in the application of Markov processes, three examples are taken to illustrate the power of this technique in solving problems of different categories. The first example illustrates how short memory situation in a physical phenomenon can be accurately incorporated into a Markov chain which inherently requires no-memory characteristic (Markovian property). The second example develops an analytical model to study the behaviour under a practical congestion control mechanism in the HSPA (High Speed Packet Access)- Radio Link Control layer. The third example gives a powerful algorithm using a transient Markov chain to find all distinct paths between any two nodes in a network.

Natural Induction - A Program for Pattern Discovery Abstract: This talk concerns the development of a new direction in machine learning, called natural induction, which requires from computer generated knowledge not only to have high predictive accuracy, but also to be in human-oriented forms, such as natural language descriptions and/or graphical representations. Such forms facilitate understanding and acceptance of the learned knowledge, and making mental models that are useful for decision making. An initial version of the AQ21 program for natural induction and its several novel features are briefly described.

Controlling Factory Production Abstract: We will present recently completed and ongoing work on controlling factory production lines. We will show for a discrete event model of a semiconductor factory how the position of the boundary between push and pull policies can act as a control actuator. We also develop a Lagrangian optimization scheme for the problem of outflux tracking for several continuous models of a production line using the factory starts as control. We will show how the success of the tracking problem depends on the characteristics of the factory - agile production follows fast demand fluctuations while inert (slow) factories follow the mean.

Direktor des CRT in Montreal Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation and Département d’informatique et de recherche opérationnelle Université de Montréal http://www.crt.umontreal.ca While real-time fleet management problems have been around for many years, the development of new communication and vehicle location technologies as well as the emphasis on just-in-time transportation have put a new emphasis on them. In spite of recent advances in computing power and solution methodologies, these problems remain extremely challenging, because they differ in many ways from static operations research planning problems. In this talk, we describe some of the main challenges that are typically encountered when dealing with such problems and we describe a robust, practical approach to deal with them. Applications of this approach to courier and ambulance dispatching problems will be used to illustrate it.

Gastvortrag von Sarah Mount
Cogent Computing Applied Research Centre Faculty of Engineering and Computing Coventry University Coventry CV1 5FB Writing software for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is far from trivial due to the distributed and real-time nature of the software, the reliability of the network and the limitations of the underlying hardware. Several existing simulators, such as TOSSim and Avrora, require designers to write "real" code for a target platform, thus finalising the implementation details of an algorithm before testing it. This is extremely useful for testing optimisation strategies and low-level details such as the likely timing characteristics of a protocol on a specific platform, but less useful for considering high-level characteristics such as centralised vs. distributed processing. SenSor is a simulator which, in the same spirit as Tinker, enables rapid prototyping of algorithms and encourages the designer to consider the operation of the network as a whole, before code is written for a target platform. Unlike Tinker, SenSor is able to visually represent network communications and can be used to examine networking protocols as well as data processing. A variety of WSN algorithms have been simulated in SenSor and the following will be presented: * Acoustic localization; * Rumour routing and directed diffusion * Hierarchial cluster routing. Early results will be presented from current work involving bridging the gap between high-level simulations in SenSor and low-level code on target platforms.

LPF-TAG ( Laboratorio de Propiedades Físicas de Productos Agrícolas y Tecnologías Avanzadas en Agroalimentación ) Edificio de Motores y Máquinas Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Agrónomos Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Avda. The quality of fruits is getting more important. Technically speaking, the internal biological and chemical processes of fresh produce, such as respiration, will continue after harvesting. This means that the product absorbs oxygen (O2) and releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethylene(C2H4). This is a process that generates heat. Lowering the temperature reduces the respiration and the heat considerably. Therefore, temperature is the most important factor during the transport. As high concentrations of CO2 and ethylene can deteriorate the commodities, these gases must be removed and replaced with fresh air through the ventilation system. Tracking and tracing the transport of fruits and vegetables during the supply chain is the basis of guarantying their quality to consumers. The integration of emergent information technologies is able to provide complete monitoring information about their status. And carry out with the legal requirements in food traceability.

Gastreferent: Dr. Guido Möllering, Max-Planck-Institut für Gesellschaftsforschung (MPIfG), Köln "Just do it !?

07.11.06 | Gastvortrag: "The likelihood of rare events in packet queues" |
17:15 | Universität Bremen, MZH 7260 (Ebene 7), Bibliothekstraße 1 |
Dr. Ken Duffy
Hamilton Institute National University of Ireland, Maynooth In IP networks, such as the Internet, packets of data are of variable size. When they arrive at a router, they are queued before being forwarded. Interestingly, although the period of time a packet takes to be transmitted is a function of its size, for engineering reasons the buffer space at routers is typically determined by a number of packets. If a packet arrives when the buffer space is fully occupied, it is lost. In a system that is well behaved, these losses should be unlikely. In this talk we will use functional large deviation theory to analyse the behaviour of a packet queue. We determine logarithmic asymptotics for the likelihood of long waiting times and large queue lengths, and the most likely path to these rare events. For illustrative purposes, predictions will be compared with empirical data. The probability of these rare events is related to the large deviations rate functions of the stochastic packet sizes and inter-arrival times. If there is time, we will introduce a non-parametric estimator for these rate functions and prove that the estimator itself inherit the large deviation principle. This suggests a mechanism for using these abstract results in practice. Mathematical challenges which remain will be highlighted.

Herr Prof. Hirshi Ito
Department of Systems Innovation and Informatics Kyushu Institute of Technology 680-4 Kawazu, Iizuka Fukuoka 820-8502, Japan Abstract: This talk consists of introduction of Kyushu institute of technology (KIT) and a research in the area of nonlinear systems control from an applied perspective. The first part will be about brief history and organization in which our research is carried out. Some figures of the university shown may not only illustrate the institution, but also give a glimpse into a tough situation in a transitional period of structural reform taking place in Japan. The second part is concerned with theory of nonlinear systems control the speaker has mainly focused on recently. This talk does not presents the most advanced theory. Instead, benefits from such theoretical research is illustrated by sketching an example of industrial application which the speaker was involved until recently. Control of wastewater treatment (WWT) is an extremely complex problem with a lot of nonlinearities, and has not been a common subject in the community of model-based control design in Japan and worldwide as well. The speaker introduces the concept of dissipation to control of WWT systems. The action of a controller is understood as a additional process implemented to modify dissipative behavior of energy. The dissipation approach is useful in dealing with complex nonlinear systems. It enables us to look at them as interconnection of simpler subsystems, and estimate the full system's behavior. The dissipation by itself is too fundamental a property to be used practically in demanding situations. This motivates the speaker and researchers to develop more advanced theories addressing more specific properties of nonlinear interconnected systems.
27.10.06 | Gastvortrag: "Sufficient conditions for the preservation of the iISS property of cascaded systems" |
10:00 -12:00 | Universität Bremen, Bibliothekstr. 1, MZH 7050 |
Antoine Chaillet
Laboratoire des signaux et systèmes Ècole supérieure d'électricité Université Paris-sud 11 (Frankreich) A field of stability analysis, regrouped under the paradigm of input to state stability (ISS), is especially concerned by the impact of external signals on the performance of the system. Without going into details, this property imposes that the norm of the current state be bounded by a function of the amplitude of the perturbing signal plus a fading term depending on initial conditions. A relaxed extension of this property is called integral input to state stability (iISS). Instead of the amplitude of the external signal, this property takes into account the “energy” that the latter feeds to the system. The iISS property is very general in stability analysis and provides interesting information about the system. For instance, if the input energy is finite, then the state converges to zero. In this sense, iISS (as well as ISS) therefore constitutes a powerful measure of the robustness of a system to external perturbations. Contrarily to ISS, it is well known that iISS is not naturally preserved by cascade interconnection. The aim of this talk is to present recent results that provide (simple) sufficient conditions under which the cascade composed of two iISS systems is itself iISS. These conditions are first given based on the assumed Lyapunov functions for each of the two susbsystems, and, as a second step, based on the estimates of their solutions. As a corollary, we also extend an existing result by proposing a simple condition that ensures that the cascade of an iISS system driven by a GAS one remains GAS. The proofs of these results make use of auxiliary results that may have intererest at their own, such as changing of supply rates, specific converse results, etc. We will therefore detail them during the presentation.
26.10.06 | Gastvortrag "The state-dependent scaling approach to stability of nonlinear interconnected dissipative systems" |
13:00 -15:00 | Universität Bremen, Bibliothekstr. 1, MZH 7050 |
Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Ito
Kyushu Institute of Technology (Japan) Abstract: With the increase of interdisciplinary problems arising in recent development and interest in science and technology, there has been an increasing demand for the progress of control systems theory in order to be capable of dealing with a large variety of nonlinearities and complexities. Some of such examples include the areas of communication networks, cooperative autonomous systems and biological systems and so on. In this talk, we will address the issue of developing new control-theoretic tools to effectively establish global stability properties of nonlinear interconnected system, and discuss our new approach to this subject. The idea of state-dependent scaling problems is introduced as a unified mathematical formulation whose solutions explicitly provide Lyapunov functions proving dissipative properties of feedback and cascade nonlinear systems. This talk discusses not only formal applicability to general systems, but also demonstrates substantial effectiveness in establishing stability involving nonlinearities stronger than ones covered by previously existing stability theorems. Solutions to the state-dependent scaling problems for input-to-state and integral input-to-state stabilities are offered. Popular classical stability criteria and the ISS small-gain theorem are explained as special cases in a unified language.

Prof. William McKelvey
Professor of Strategic Organizing and Complexity Science University of California and Anderson School of Management (UCLA), Los Angeles, USA For the CRC 637, it is a special honor to welcome Prof. William McKelvey (Professor of Strategic Organizing and Complexity Science) at the University of Bremen. In management sciences, Prof. McKelvey belongs to the worldwide leading group of scientists in the area of evolutionary research. His current research focus on: philosophy of organization science; complexity science and emergence; self-organization vs. selectionist order creation; coevolutionary theory; human and social capital aspects of competitive strategy; distributed intelligence; organization design; organizational microstate rate dynamics; and agent-based, adaptive-learning, computational models. About his presentation: While normal distributions, Gaussian statistics, and current quantitative methods are still relevant for a significant portion of organizational research, there is growing evidence that Pareto distributions, power laws, and underlying scale-free theories are increasingly pervasive and valid characterizations of organizational dynamics. They would be even more pronounced if researchers looked more carefully for them rather than getting rid of outliers, as is the current practice, and could have far greater consequence than current users of Gaussian statistics presume. To the extent this is true, researchers ignoring power law effects risk drawing false conclusions in their articles and promulgating useless advice to managers. This because what is important to most managers are the extremes they face, not the averages. Given this: How to redirect organization science toward the study of extremes in ways that still fall within the bounds of an effective science – one that still offers credible bases for asserting truth claims? The questions which will be discussed within the presentation are: 1. Do power laws and underlying scale-free theories offer organization scientists Gell-Mann’s “deep simplicity” explanation of organizational complexity? 2. Does “deep simplicity” theory offer a more attractive platform for effective research and more meaningful practitioner relevance than what organization science now gets from the many discipline-centric theories and methods characterizing it? 3. Finally, if extremes are important, can they be predicted?
04.10.06 | Workshop & Gastvortrag: “Complexity Science as Order-Creation Science: New Philosophy, New Theory, New Method” |
13:30 -15:30 | Universität Bremen, WING Gebäude, Wilhelm-Herbst-Str. 12, Raum 0.03 |
Prof. William McKelvey
Professor of Strategic Organizing and Complexity Science University of California and Anderson School of Management (UCLA), Los Angeles, USA Traditional ‘normal’ science has long been defined by classical physics and most obviously carried over into social science by neoclassical economics. Especially because of the increasingly rapid change dynamics at the dawn of the 21st century, different kinds of foundational assumptions are needed for an effective scientific epistemology. Complexity science - really ‘order-creation science’ - is particularly relevant because it is founded on theories explicitly aimed at explaining order creation rather than accounting for classical physicists’ traditional concerns about explaining equilibrium. This presentation sets up the rapid change problem, and shows why evolutionary theory is not the best approach for explaining entrepreneurship and organizational change dynamics. New theories from order-creation science are briefly presented. The continuing centrality of models in scientific realist definitions of modern science is brought to center stage. Agent-based computational models are shown to be better than math models in playing the role of forcing theoretical elegance and continuing the essential experimental tradition of effective science.
18.09.06 | Gastvortrag: Context-Driven Methodology for Operational Decision Making in Network-Centric environment |
09:00 -10:00 | Universität Bremen, BIBA, Hochschulring 20, Auditorium 1240 |
Gastvortrag von Prof. Alexander Smirnov
St.Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of the Russian Academy of Sciences The objective of intelligent support for operational decision making is to assess the relevance of information to a decision and to gain insight in seeking and evaluating possible decision alternatives. Operational decisions must rely on timely, accurate, directly usable, and easily obtainable information provided by the dynamic environment (the totality of surrounding conditions). These decisions can be characterized as ad hoc, quick-accessible decisions based on past experience and providing for alternatives. They are applied in frequently occurring and in unexpected and new situations. The talk presents an approach aimed at modeling and solving a problem considering changes in the environment. The problem is modeled by abstract and operational contexts integrating relevant knowledge and information provided by information sources that keep track of environment changes. Knowledge is represented by ontologies. Technologies supporting the approach are ontology management for identification and definition of the problem requiring a solution, context management for gathering and organizing contextual information and for capturing decisions, and constraint satisfaction for problem solving. Context is defined as any information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity, where an entity is a person, place or object that is considered relevant to the interaction between a user and an application, including the user and application themselves. The proposed approach is well related to the situation awareness level of JDL data fusion model. Object-oriented constraint networks (OOCN) serve as a model for ontology & context representation, problem definition and solving within the approach. The OOCN' formalism represents knowledge by sets of classes, classes' attributes, attributes' domains, and a set of constraints (hierarchical, associative, compatibility, and functional). This representation is in compliance with the internal representations of constraint solvers (e.g. ILOG) and widely used knowledge representation languages such as OWL, DAML+OIL, RDF, XML, etc. Following a well-known Simon's model of decision making process the approach consists of two stages. The preliminary stage is responsible for preparedness of a decision support system to make decisions. At this stage the following activities are carried out: (i) creation of semantic models for components of a decision support system (information sources, domain knowledge representing the area of interests, and users.), (ii) accumulating domain knowledge, and (iii) linking domain knowledge elements to the environment sources (sensors, Web-sites, databases, etc.). The decision making stage deals with integration of information & knowledge relevant to the problem into the context, problem modeling and solving. The approach is implemented as an adaptive service (based on multiagent technology) for humanitarian logistics support and flexible supply chain network configuration.
