General Remarks

In order to make autonomous logistic processes more graspable, four different demonstrators with representative scenarios have been developed which depict processes of transport and production logistics. These are:
• Demonstrator “Transport Logistics”
• Demonstrator “Automobile Logistics” (Imagefilm)
• Demonstrator “Intelligent Container” (Imagefilm)
• Demonstrator “Production Logistics / Factory of autonomous Products” (Imagefilm)
By assuming active roles during the presentation of the demonstrators, visitors to CRC 637 are able to follow the decision-making processes through their own observations and experience. The aim is to familiarise them with the subject matter and research approach pursued by CRC 637. Following each presentation a question and discussion session will be held to exchange new insights and ideas.
The demonstrators are installed on the testing floor of the Bremen Institute for Production and Logistics (BIBA). This is where the infrastructure of subproject Z2 is to be found, comprising the communication and localisation infrastructure and the mobile PDAs. In a first step this calls for a Wireless Local Area Network (WiFi) of 802.11b standard (with an option for 802.11g), which has the capacity to transmit a band width of 11Mbit/s. Customised software has been installed in order to utilise the conventional WiFi infrastructure and to calculate the locations of the individual PDAs.
Subproject Z2’s hardware pool comprises PDAs, active positioning tag systems (Ekahau), notebooks, a tablet PC, two development servers, RFID readers (UHF and LF) and a monorail transport system. The hardware was supplemented in the UHF-RFID area in order to facilitate the identification of performance measures using identification and temporal data.
Furthermore, to enable a swift presentation of the above mentioned scenarios, a virtual simulation model of the locational structure and transport routes was made available as a test environment, both for the transport scenario as well as for the production logistics scenario. This provides a combination of the physical environment on the testing floor and a virtual simulation, resulting in a hybrid demonstration model.
